OBU QLD Lunch 2016
Thirty men ranging in age from 29 to 88 attended the 2016 annual QLD lunch at Brisbane’s United Service Club on Wednesday 25 May 2016.
On arrival guests were given a chance to mingle and catch up on what they had been up to over the past 12 months before the formal side of the day took place.
Long standing Convener Tony Ritchie (63) welcomed all, including guests the Headmaster Dr Tim Wright, OBU Community Relations Manager Rick Clive (68) and the Chaplain to the Shore Community Nick Foord (80). Those who had undertaken long distances to attend were also mentioned.
Rev Foord gave a lovely Grace of thanks and friendship prior to the main meal being served.
With the North Sydney campus set to undergo a major re-development over the next few years the Headmaster spoke to a Power Point Presentation. The Shore Physical Education Centre he said would see a new 50m Indoor Swimming Pool being built to replace the 25m Pool opened in 1970, a new Multi -Purpose Built Gymnasium for Basketball and Gymnastics and the addition of 6 new class rooms. The building of the Gymnasium he said would also enable the School to hold big events at the venue including that of Speech Day.
Following this the Headmaster gave his usual address on the success of the School over the past 12 months. He also took a number of questions from the floor. Tony in response gave a brief Toast to the School while Rick gave an update on recent OBU movements and activities while reporting on a number of Old Boys who had been in the spotlight of late.
The afternoon concluded with Rick handing out a few gifts, one to Brian Fitzpatrick (45) who had celebrated his 88th birthday two days before, one each to the youngsters in attendance Tristan Ozinga (2002) and Chris Jansen (2004) and one to Tony for his continued support of the event, which he has been involved in for well over 25 years.
In closing Tony mentioned that he looked forward to future years, advising that the lunch would be held at the same venue on the last Wednesday in May 2017.
It was a wonderful afternoon filled with people who not only enjoyed themselves but had one thing in common, that of having at some stage in their youth attended without a doubt the best School in the Country.
