One Hundred and Eleven members of the Mitre Club attended the annual Mitre Club Christmas Luncheon at Northbridge on Tuesday 8 December 2015, the luncheon one of two conducted by the Mitre Club each year, the other being the Legends of Shore luncheon held mid-year.
The Convener of the Mitre Club Dr Mick Swinburn (54) welcomed all including the Headmaster Dr Tim Wright and Mrs Louise Williams author of the book ‘The Great Escape’, the story of two Old Boys, John Williams (36) and Reginald (Rusty) Kierath (33) who were among the fifty executed by the Gestapo following recapture after tunnelling out of Stalag Loft III during World War 2.
The Community Chaplain Rev Dr Nick Foord (80) commenced proceedings with a Christmas message before saying Grace.
During the course of the afternoon the Headmaster gave an update on the School year just completed while Graham Lewarne (54) led the singing of the very popular Christmas Carol, ‘Oh Come all ye Faithful’ and a rendition of the School song ‘Here’s to the Shore boy’.
To conclude a very enjoyable afternoon Louise Williams addressed the luncheon on the writing of her book and the research undertaken by her including a number of visits to the Shore Archives to obtain relative information. John Kierath in representing the Kierath family also addressed the luncheon.
Next year the Mitre Club will honour Ross Doig (Art Teacher 1954-1989) as the Legend of Shore with an emphasis on those Old Boys who were inspired by his teaching which led to their work being hung in Public Galleries. Mitre Club members will be notified of the date early in the New Year.
